Dualie
If you've never ridden a bike with a kick shift, don't feel out-of-the-loop, they're not exactly on every street corner. And if you've never ridden a 2-speed kick shift bike with a Gates CenterTrack belt drive on a gorgeous track frame – well that's because there isn't one – until now. The Dualie is eccentric in every sense of the word. It has the soul of a single-speed street bike slicing through town with the physicality of unparalleled technical innovation. Back pedal slightly to downshift, and do the same to upshift. It's as simple as it sounds. And with no gear cables or handlebar shifters, it looks simple too. Let the superlatives begin.
-
Gates CenterTrack:
Next generation Carbon Drive System. Unique, super-strong, carbon-reinforced polyurethane system that requires no lube and provides a nearly silent ride. CenterTrack is stronger, lighter, more compact, and better at shedding debris than the prior Gates systems.
-
Dropout Compatibility:
Patent-pending Kobe Slider Dropouts allow belt-driven or chain-driven configurations, and painless wheel removal with no need to re-tension the belt.
-
Track/Urban Geometry:
Perfect for slicing through town.
-
Hydration Friendly:
Water bottle mount on down tube.

I just test rode this bike at a Chicago LBS. All the praise is worthy. Really smooth and the kick shift isn’t too hard to get the hang of. The only thing keeping me from splurging is that it doesn’t have fender or rack mounts. I’m a commuter, and I’m not sure I could go back to wearing a backpack and/or getting soaked.
Spot: Please put mounts on next year’s model and I will buy it.

Incedible. Steel; Belt Driven; 2-Speed Kickback! Keepin’ it old school! The most fun i’ve had on a bike in a long time. What else needs to be said.

The Dualie is one awesome bike. I have been wanting a single speed steel road bike for a while, but my commute is 1000′ of climbing if I take the non-hilly route and I like my knees intact. The gearing is perfect and the belt drive is virtually silent.
I did have one small issue with the 2 speed hub, but the folks at Spot sent me a PDF that was super easy to follow and I fixed the problem. The design of the drop-out means you don’t have to worry about tensioning the belt when you have to pop the rear wheel out. Easy-peasy.
I love this bike.
Another thing to note–you will be asked a lot of questions, so be ready to gloat.

Broke a 5-year hiatus from bike commuting with this Dualie. After much research and many quickly answered Qs by Spot Brand, ordered sight unseen from Joe Bike, who had me rolling within the week. Low maintenance belt drive kick shift is the perfect single speed alternative for Portland’s weather and hills. Already planning to add another Spot Brand bike to the stable in future!
